“During a time of civil war in Korea, a certain General led his troops through province after province, overrunning whatever stood in his path.

The people of one town, knowing that he was coming and having heard tales of his cruelty, all fled into the mountains.

The General arrived in the empty town. Some of the soldiers came back and reported that only one person remained a Zen priest. The general strode over to the temple, walked in, pulled out his sword, and said, “Don’t you know who I am? I am the one who can run through you without batting an eye.”

The Zen master looked back and calmly responded, “And I sir, am the one who can run through without batting an eye”. The General, hearing this bowed and left."

 

To be able to be calm in the face of aggression, and not just calm, but strong and powerful. You can gain this sense of strength within you. It is possible.

If you are still angry from a break up from a relationship years ago or even recently? The only person who is suffering is you.

Are still angry every time you think about or see the other person, with yourself?  How did you let your partner dis-respect you?

Do you have unresolved anger from a business relationship where you were "exploited" or a "family" issue where you felt betrayed?

No matter what, even if you think you are "over' the situation and you are happy and content most of the time, the anger surprises you sometimes. It bubbles up at unexpected times that have nothing to do with the original situation.

What were you taught about anger?

  • that it was bad

  • you need to control it

  • it is OK to blast some-one who deserves it

You will have some views that you hold about anger and if they are not serving you, maybe t is time to have another look.

If you have anger that is suppressed you may be:

  • mean to some-one who has absolutely nothing to do with the original source of your anger

  • blow up at anybody, shopkeepers, driving, ???

  • start to feel physically unwell as the toxicity produces acid in your body and dis-ease begins

  • What if there is another way? What if anger is there for a reason?

If you are exploited, dis-respected or abused,  anger surfaces to propel you to take action to protect yourself.

If you see other people exploited in the would, your anger surfaces and it gives you the energy to make a stand against injustices such as rape, theft, lies, crime etc

Yes anger has a purpose, but when we have not known how to stand and speak up for ourselves and others,

or

we have not known that we were being manipulated or dis-respected at the time,

the anger surfaces later.

Then we may be angry with ourselves as well for not seeing it coming, for not taking the acton to create a respectful boundary.

We may be angry with that other person but not be able to take the action that is needed now.
